Pathology Specific Biomechanical Examination Templates
The following electronic medical records (EMR) templates are provided by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine to assist residency directors in meeting the goals and education requirements of the biomechanical examination, as set forth in the CPME 320 document. The templates are organized to be pathology-specific, but can be modified as required. Because patients present with specific complaints, hip-to-toe biomechanical examinations are not necessarily pertinent to every clinical scenario. The objective of the templates provided is to have the resident demonstrate knowledge of the underlying pathomechanics relevant to the condition by:
a. performing pertinent aspects of the biomechanical examination and indicating contributing factors
b. making the appropriate diagnosis as a result of the findings and assessment
First-year residents may require more supervision and more global evaluation of a given patient as they hone their clinical skills, while third-year residents may be able to more ably focus on the specific pathomechanics for the given presentation.
The following templates are meant to work in a modular fashion. For example, in the case of a patient with hallux limitus and a pes planus foot type the pathology-specific template for Pes Planus is used and the template for Hallux Valgus is inserted in the area where the template suggests. If at that point the examination findings are not sufficient to explain the presenting pathology the Proximal Examination template may be added.
